It’s been a disappointing season for the Manchester Phoenix who currently sit in 8th place with two more regular season games to go. Overtime losses have really made an impact on their season, with them losing 8 in overtime which is the highest in the league. In total, 11 of their games have gone into overtime but they have only won 3 of those games. The English Premier league is a very tough league to compete in, since you have teams with better financial power such as Telford Tigers and Guildford flames who can afford the best players and that’s one of the reasons why the phoenix have struggled. There have been some great moments in their season however such as the recent 5-4 win against third placed Guildford. The game was a great spectacle to watch, as approaching the mid stages of the third period, Phoenix were 4-2 down but then spurred on a comeback thanks to goals from Mark Thomas and Stanislav Gron. The winner came at 63:20 through Thomas after he poked home Robin Kovar’s shot.
In basketball, Manchester Magic are sitting at the top of the Men’s division one table with games in hand over the teams below. Having only suffered one loss all season, the Magic's have found consistency across the board in attack and defence. They have scored 1804 points, as well as conceding 1446 points, which is the best in the league. They have also been performing well in cup competitions, as recently they secured back to back National trophy titles beating Reading Rockets 92-71. The game started with the Magic's going on a 9-0 run and by the end of the first quarter it was 22-15 in favour of the Magic's. From there on the Magic's never looked like relinquishing their lead. Franc Garcia Garrido was named as the MVP after his 15 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists from the bench.
The Manchester Thunder are also having a great season, sitting at the top of the table after 8 games, level on points with Hertfordshire Mavericks. With 7 wins out 8 the thunder have made a great start to their league campaign. Thunder went back to the top, after a hard fought win against Northumbria. The game finished 65-51 to Thunder who were playing away from home. Thunder coach Dan Ryan, gave a debut to 18 year old shooter Amy Clinton as the Thunder saw out an easy win, which lifted them over the Mavericks into top spot. Ellie Cardwell displayed her composed shooting to fire Manchester into an early lead, but Team Northumbria produced a spirited response in the third quarter. Jamaican imports Shanice Beckford and Nicole Dixon inspired a fightback from Northumbria, who began to test Manchester's youthful line-up. But England duo Sara Bayman and Laura Malcolm produced assured performances in front of the defence and teenager Clinton made a winning start to her Manchester career.
