Week 6 of the Betway Premier league darts took place in Nottingham and it Michael Van Gerwen and Phil Taylor set the stage for their top of the table clash next week in Glasgow.
MVG continued his fine form against Dave Chisnall, averaging 113 and at one point looked set to eclipse the 124 he averaged a couple of weeks ago. Chisnall could only look on as most opponents do at the sight of Van Gerwen taking the game away from them. Van Gerwen wrapped up the game 7-2 to add another five legs to his leg difference on the table.
Taylor has been rejuvenated in the past few weeks because of the prospect of Van Gerwen walking away with the league. Taylor faced Robert Thornton, in a match which can only be described as "Whitewash" as Taylor handed Thornton a 7-0 loss to add to Thornton's misery of being bottom of the table. The whitewash always looked on from the start, with Taylor teasing nine darters every leg but unfortunately never gave the electric Nottingham crowd what they wanted. Taylor finished off with a double 4 to seal Thornton's fate.
The Adrian Lewis conundrum was in effect again last night, a week after getting thrashed 7-1 by his long time mentor Phil Taylor, Lewis responded by beating Peter Wright who at the start of night was third in the league. Lewis wrapped up the game by producing a 136 finish to end the game at 7-3 and end the game convincingly, with Wright not really getting going from the outset.
Undoubtedly the game of the night belonged to Van Barneveld and Wade, who served up a 12 leg thriller which excited pundits and fans alike but it seemed as though Barneveld threw away the game with his lacklustre finishing. Wade was happy to take the points away from Barney despite the Dutch master scoring a 161 finish.
Gary Anderson picked up come momentum with a 7-3 win over the young Michael Smith and that was his third win in a row after picking up first win in week four. The current champion dealt a harsh but professional lesson to Michael Smith.
Michael Smith 3-7 Gary Anderson
Peter Wright 3-7 Adrian Lewis
Raymond van Barneveld 5-7 James Wade
Robert Thornton 0-7 Phil Taylor
Dave Chisnall 2-7 Michael van Gerwen
