Irlam Vs Salford City

Richard Allen and Matthew Warburton both helped themselves to a brace as Salford City eased past Irlam in the first round of the Manchester Premier Cup.
Salford, who were coming off the back of a defeat in the FA Cup against Stockport County at the weekend, threatened early on with Warburton hitting the post after some very neat build up play down the left hand side. Salford took the lead, when a ball over the defence from Richie Wellens was met by Allen, who rounded the keeper and slotted into the empty net in the 33rd minute.
Salford doubled their lead after half time, as they hit Irlam on the break and Warburton was on hand to put the ball past the keeper in the 55th minute after being played in by Allen. This came after Irlam had threatened the Salford end, with a fierce shot by Michael Tetteh forcing Tom Russell to make a good save.
Five minutes after Salford had doubled their lead, they made it three with a corner kick routine which was dispatched into the left hand side of the goal, by Allen giving him his brace. John Johnston almost made it four for Salford but his lovely dipping shot which looped over the keeper, was ruled out for offside. In the 89th minute Warburton got his second, after some well worked build up play in which Warburton was on hand to finish at the end of it.
Irlam rarely threatened on the night, which saw their play being restricted to a couple of longshots and balls over the top which were to no avail in the end. The game was also one to remember for Salford City right back Dominic Smalley, as this was his first game back after a lengthy spell on the side-lines
