Everton was founded in 1878 and was one of the founding members of the Football League. A season after the inception of the Football League, Everton won their first top-flight league title and won their first FA Cup in 1906. It wasn't until 1925 where the club sustained its first period of success. In that year, the club signed Dixie Dean from Tranmere Rovers and Dixie Dean went on to set a Football League record (which still stands) scoring 60 league goals in a season which ultimately led Everton to their third league title. They were relegated two years later but bounced straight back up, not only that they won the First Division title at the earliest opportunity.
Everton's second successful era started when Harry Catterick was made manager in 1961. In 1962–63, his second season in charge, Everton won the League Championship. In 1966 the club won the FA Cup with a 3–2 win over Sheffield Wednesday. Everton again reached the final in 1968, but this time was unable to overcome West Bromwich Albion at Wembley. Two seasons later in 1969–70, Everton won the League Championship, finishing nine points clear of nearest rivals Leeds United. During this period, Everton was the first English club to achieve five consecutive years in European competitions — covering the seasons from 1961–62 to 1966–67.
Everton's most successful era came in the 1980's under manager Howard Kendall who guided The Toffees to an FA Cup win in 1984, as well as league titles in 1985 and 1987. In the 1984/85 season, they achieved the double winning the league and Cup Winners Cup. The Cup Winners Cup was Everton's first taste of European silverware beating the likes of Bayern Munich on route to glory.
Everton have never been relegated from the Premier League since its inception. In 2002 the club appointed David Moyes as manager, who guided them to a safe 15th place finish towards the end of the 2001/02 season. Under Moyes, the club finished 7th the following season and under his reign he introduced Wayne Rooney into the team. Everton manages to qualify for the Champions League in 2004/05 season after finishing 4th in that campaign.
