Burnley Football Club have a very rich history for a club that isn't one of the big names in terms of big name stature but their presence in the English game is nothing to be scoffed at. Formed as a Rugby club in 1882, the club changed its focus to football and in 1888 they became one of the 12 founding members of the Football League, setting the very foundations for the modern-day game. Since the inception of the Football League, Burnley have won every major honour apart from the League Cup.

Commonly known as The Clarets, they achieved success either side of the First World War and they adopted the Claret and Blue of Aston Villa who at the time were England's most successful club side. Their "Golden Years" occurred during the years after Second World War. In the 1950's the team was spearheaded by the likes of Jimmy Mcllroy and Jimmy Adamson and under the guidance of Harry Potts (whose name is given to the road which Turf Moor is based) they secured the Division 1 title in the 1959/60 season.

Burnley were one of the world pioneers and one of the most progressive clubs in the 1960s under the reign of chairman Bob Lord. They were the first team in the world to build a training ground next to the stadium, while every other team still trained in their own stadium, and the Turf Moor club used innovative training methods. Among other things, this resulted in an excellent youth team. Nearly all members of the 1959–60 Division 1 winning team had played in the Burnley youth team. Lord also pioneered the 'football specials'. 'The Clarets' were also the first to let a manager decide about the transfer policy. After this title-winning season finished, Burnley went to the United States to take part in the first-ever international football tournament in North-America, the International Soccer League.

This season coming will mark the fifth outing in the Premier League (under the Premier League era) for the Clarets. Their first season was in 2009/10 where they were promoted through Wade Elliot's winning goal in the playoff final but was relegated the following season. After another failed attempt to stay in the Premier League in 2015 the Clarets managed to stay up in the 2016/17 season and finished 7th last season under Sean Dyche to qualify for the Europa League.
