The foundations of Manchester United was set in 1878 when the club was originally founded as Newton Heath before opting to change the club's name to Manchester United. Manchester United statistically speaking are the most successful club in English football and have become one of the more recognisable sporting clubs in history. After the name change in 1902, the club was managed by Ernest Mangnall who guided the club to promotion in 1906 and subsequently won their first ever league title in 1908 in the First Division.

The club's first sustained period of success came under club legend Matt Busby who proceeded to take control over all team affairs from the first team to the youth team. Busby led the team to three consecutive runners-up places before eventually winning the Division One title in 1952. During this decade, they went to record back-to-back league titles and with an average of 22 the team was known as the "Busby Babes". Tragedy struck Manchester United in 1958 after a plane crash after a European game in Munich, caused the death of 23 people including eight of the Busby Babes. Ten years later the club would go on to win their first European Cup beating Benfica 4-1 with a team that contained the likes of George Best, Bobby Charlton and Dennis Law.

The Red Devils appointed Sir Alex Ferguson in 1986 and he went on to pick up his first trophy as United boss winning the FA Cup in 1990. What followed was a sustained period of dominance over the English game in which Manchester United won 13 Premier League titles, two European Cups, six FA Cup among other trophies. Their greatest achievement came in the 1998/99 season where they won the historic treble and the last of their trophies in that season was won in very dramatic circumstances. Two injury time goals snatched the Champions League from Bayern Munich for United to complete the treble.

In 2010/11 they finally overhauled Liverpool's existing record of 18 league titles, winning their 19th in the process, they went on to lift their 20th league title in the 2012/13.
