Tottenham Hotspur was founded in 1882 by a group of schoolboys aged 13 to 14 but originally they were known as "The Hotspur Football Club" until they changed their name to "Tottenham Hotspur Football Club" in 1884 due to a mailbag issue, where the club was receiving mail from another team in London with a similar name. Now officially known as Tottenham Hotspur, the club founded their eventual home of White Hart Lane when they leased a piece of land behind the White Hart pub. Originally it was leased before the land was purchased fully in 1905.  During this time Spurs won the FA Cup in 1901 and historically it was the first game to be filmed. The game finished 2-2, with two goals from Sandy Brown which meant the replay would be played at Burnden Park where Spurs won
3-1. Lifting the FA Cup for the first time.

In 1908, Tottenham applied to be part of the Football League but was initially rejected until Stoke City pulled out due to financial trouble and were initially put in the Second Division of the Football League. Their first ever game in the Football League was a 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers with Vivian Woodward scoring their first ever goal. Woodward would be instrumental in their promotion that season, scoring 18 goals in 27 appearances as Spurs finished runners-up. Woodward left Tottenham to join Chelsea the following season. In their first season in the First Division, they narrowly avoided relegation coincidentally beating Chelsea on the final day to send them down. Tottenham finished bottom of the league before the outbreak of World War I and once the war was over Tottenham had to play life back in the Second Division. They were, promoted straight away under the guidance of Peter McWilliam and the following year they won their second FA Cup beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. Spurs players started to wear the famous cockerel emblem that has become synonymous with the football club after the FA Cup win in 1921.

In the 1950's and 60's Tottenham experienced their most successful period in the club's history. Under the guidance of manager Arthur Rowe, Spurs won their first league title in 1951. The players in the side included Alf Ramsey, the captain Ron Burgess, Eddie Baily, Les Bennett, Les Medley, Arthur Willis, Ted Ditchburn, Len Duquemin, Sonny Walters and Bill Nicholson.  The playing style was known as "The Spurs Way", playing high pressure football winning the ball high up and focusing on using patterned triangles when playing in an attacking manner. Bill Nicholson later took charge of Spurs in 1958 and three years later in 1961 Tottenham achieved the league and cup double, becoming the first side in the 20th century to do so.  They then won their first European competition in 1963, winning the Cup Winners Cup becoming the first British side to win a European trophy. They won yet another FA Cup in 1981 beating Manchester City 3-2. The highlight of that game was a memorable goal from Ricardo (Ricky) Villa.

In recent years, Tottenham have been under a resurgence. Harry Redknapp led them to Champions League qualification in 2010 and in that campaign the following season they reached the quarter-finals, with some impressive performances from Gareth Bale. The next couple of years were mixed for Tottenham, failing to qualify and managerial sackings led them to hire Mauricio Pochettino from Southampton. Under Pochettino, Tottenham have become a side that can once again challenge for a league title and have relied on young English talent such as Dele Alli and Harry Kane. In 2017, they finished above rivals Arsenal for the first time in 21 years.
